Jane Nelson is a Master's level Social Worker licensed to practice Independent Social Work in the State of Iowa. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Marycrest College, where she coordinated the Marycrest Volunteer Center. She obtained her Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Iowa in 1990, and finished her mediation training at the Iowa Peace Institute in 2001. Jane founded Cathedral Manor, a Senior Living Project, and spent 12 years working with homeless people including battered women and children. She was a Social Worker at Johnson County Social Services for five years, and was employed at the University of Iowa Program for Assistive Technology for six years. Jane was Director of the Black Hawk Center for Independent Living, supervising a staff of 9, until 2002. She is presently teaching Social Work at a Community College in Waterloo, Iowa. Jane promotes body image and self determination in her work for persons with disabilities. She has training in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and developed an ADA audit with the Johnson County Coalition in Iowa City. Jane recently contributed to a mentoring project for women living in transitional housing while going to college. Her private practice is focused on advocacy, self advocacy training, mediation, facilitation, grant writing, group work, and private counseling for persons with disabilities. Jane is active at her local wellness center and works to make exercise and wellness accessible for all persons. She is very involved in her local Arboretum and coordinates the enabling garden for Cedar Valley Arboretum. Jane believes that encouragement and self esteem are at the center of recovery, leadership, and happiness.
