COUNSELING

I was raised by the state of Arizona until the age of
18 when I finally got to leave the cycle of "home with mom, mom gets
drunk, cuts her wrists, back to foster home" and head out on my own.
During this time, being a ward of the courts, I encountered who I now
see as my Firefighters: two psychologists who assisted in making a world
of difference in my life, and who had tried to assist my mother for
years. I fell in love with the work, or my then limited idea of it, and
decided that this was what I ultimately wanted do do with my life. At
18, I entered the Marines and had quite a time for 4 years, positive and
negative. At the end of my tour, I was unable to stay in due to the
level of escalation that my drinking had assumed and the terrible
repercussions it had on my performance as a Marine. It was during this
time that I lost my mother to alcoholism, bipolar disorder, and suicide;
I had lost my father to the same circumstances at the age of 11. Getting
out of the Corps wasn't what I assumed would fix my problems, for my
drinking got worse and the emotional repercussions of my childhood piled
up on me something terrible, until I found myself at the same jumping
off point that my parents, and even a grandfather, had gone on before
me. As I imagined that life was only a veil of tears, it came to be more
than I had ever imagined it to be. Through a process of therapy,
education, and 12 Step work my life is today absolutely wonderful-and I
get the opportunity to do what has been done for me as a living, what a
kick! However, it did require, and still does, the following of some
simple principles and living a certain lifestyle that is conducive to
mental health, happiness, and spiritual growth. For whatever it is
worth, I haven't had a drink in some 7 years, have been happily married
for 4, and have 2 beautiful children, a boy and girl, who I get to see
as an opportunity to be of service and really learn what life is all
about. If I had tried to write out what I wanted my life to be like, I
would have surely sold myself short. As I work toward finishing my PhD
and becoming a licensed psychologist, I get the opportunity to work as a
psychotherapist under wonderful mentorship and witness miracles on a
daily basis. The best part about my life is the fact that I wouldn't
trade my history, through all of its terrors and pain, for anything. I
am truly grateful for all of my experiences and my current ability to be
able to use them to another's advantage. Perhaps I might be able to be
of service to you and all of yours. |
